Before Buying a Motor Scooter

A motor scooter is a skateboard with a motor attached so that you don't have to use one foot to push your self along. It has a handle that you can hold on to and use for steering. Some models look more like motorcycles than scooters with a seat so that the rider can be really comfortable. This type of vehicle can be gas powered or electric and can reach top speeds of 20 miles and hour. The electric models are cheaper and quieter, even though the gas scooters, being more expensive and noisy, are more popular.

The motorized scooter first came on the market back in the 1970s. Many of the early models required the rider to start pedaling before the engine would actually start. Today the scooters that you see on the market are a dressed up version of these early mopeds. They do not have any pedals, because a rider does not have to put any exertion into getting the engine running. While they are still in the 50cc category, they do go a little faster than the older models.

Some states and provinces have specific laws regarding the use of motorized scooters on the roads. While they do not require insurance, the rider usually does require a license to drive one. This means that safety regulations must be adhered to because the driver has to pass a test in order to receive the license. He/she must also wear a helmet when riding. However, you cannot ride this type of scooter on the regular roadways. You are usually limited to bike paths or the sides of the road where you do not impede the traffic.
